Proposed Varna Public Library building and its cascading landscape are based upon the site context and seasonal changes to lifestyle in the city. Public functions at the lower level link the adjacent parks to the floating library, through a series of outdoor “reading terraces”; allowing the library functions to reach out to the city. Resultant “library park” and the cultural center is not only a key touristic destination but also a dynamic public platform for the community.
Library volume above is designed to be flexible and efficient; and acts as a ‘retreat’ for the members, contrasting with the public functions below. Top of building is dedicated to the ‘winter beach’; a sea-view reading area that brings the “reading-at-the-beach” culture to indoors.
Solid archive volume is located at the north; protected from solar heat and away from public functions. Multistory art installation on its southern wall serves as a backdrop to the library and celebrates Bulgarian literature.
